How to export a workout as GPX or FIT from iPhone

Updated · 3 min read

You ran a new route with your Apple Watch and want it in another app: a route planner, a training platform, a friend’s inbox. Apple Health stores the route, but it has no export button for one workout. Its only export is everything at once, as a large archive. Here is what the built-in export gives you, and how to get a single workout out as a GPX route or a complete FIT file.

Short answer

Apple Health can’t export a single workout. Its only option is Export All Health Data (tap your profile picture in the Health app), which creates a ZIP archive of XML files, with routes as GPX files inside. For one workout, use an app that reads Apple Health: in Keho, open the workout, tap the ⋯ menu and choose Export workout. You get a FIT file with the full recording, or the route as GPX when the workout has one.

GPX or FIT: which one you need

GPXFIT
ContainsThe route: positions, elevation and timesThe full recording: route plus heart rate, pace, power, cadence where recorded

Indoor workoutsNo route, so no GPXYes

If the app you import into accepts FIT, use FIT: it carries everything. Use GPX when you only want the line on the map, or when the other app takes nothing else.

The built-in way: export all Health data

  1. Open the Health app and tap your profile picture or initials in the top right.
  2. Scroll down and tap Export All Health Data, then confirm.
  3. Wait while the iPhone prepares the archive. With years of data this can take a while.
  4. Share the ZIP file to Files or a computer and unpack it.

Inside, export.xml holds all your Health records and a folder named workout-routes holds one GPX file per workout with a route. The files are named by date and time, so finding one run means scrolling through a long list, and heart rate is not part of the GPX. This export is good as a backup, and clumsy for one workout.

Export a single workout with Keho

  1. Open Keho and find the workout in the Training tab.
  2. Open it and tap the ⋯ menu.
  3. Choose Export workout, then FIT for the full recording or GPX for the route.
  4. Send the file with the share sheet: AirDrop, Mail, Files or straight into another app.

The export works for any workout in Apple Health, whichever watch recorded it, and runs on your iPhone. GPX shows up only for workouts with a route; indoor sessions export as FIT.

Where to import the file

Going the other way, Keho imports GPX and TCX files, for example from a Strava bulk export, to bring old activities into your history. To sync Strava activities continuously instead, see Strava and Apple Health.

Common questions

Why is there no GPX for my treadmill run?

Indoor workouts have no GPS route, so there is nothing for a GPX file to describe. Export them as FIT.

Does exporting change the workout in Apple Health?

No. The export writes a copy; the workout in Apple Health stays as it was.

Can I share a route as a video instead?

Yes. Keho can replay a route as a 3D flyover and share it as a video, or share the workout as a Story, receipt, race bib or trading card. More in workout statistics from Apple Health.
